When I was a child one of the most imposing dog breeds was the German Shepherd, which was usually known as an Alsatian. These dogs were widely used by the police, and as guard dogs on domestic and commercial premises. The beauty of the German Shepherd is that this intelligent dog can be bred to defend people and property, and to attack intruders. But this is not a mindless fighter.  You only need to look into the eyes of a German Shepherd to appreciate its intellect and noble origins.  They make great family pets as well, and we know several families where a German Shepherd has been adopted as a much loved pet.  Of course I am probably biased because our precious Kev was a Collie-German Shepherd cross. To me, he was the most gorgeous creature in the world and he communicated volumes to us without words.  The aspect of his face or the expression in his eyes gave the message he wanted to send, and he understand everything going on around him.  It is acknowledged that brighter breeds of dog have a vocabulary as wide as a two year old child and I agree.  Our lovely German Shepherd cross was a fine example of the breed qualities and he is sorely missed.

A history of dogs

Canine history is a history of the friendship between us and our pet dog (Canis lupus familiaris). That friendship stems from us needing help with our herding, hunting and safety.

In times of famine it would also have been beneficial for the dog’s diet and possible survival.

Early man also used him to supplement his own diet and even may have raised him for ‘camp meat’. AT first they were probably camp meat but later would be raised as delicacy. In some current societies it is still a practice. Read more »

Labrador Retrievers

Labrador Retrievers are a high spirited, very intelligent, happy-go-lucky and loyal dog breed that is very well suited for families. They have a friendly temperament and are adaptable to different environments which makes them easy to care for and safe for children to be around. As the time since losing Kev passes, the pain receds a little. Towards the end of the year we hope to adopt another dog -or possibly two dogs. The owner of Primrose, the Standard Poodle who came from Australia, has noticed an interesting trend among local dog owners. Helen finds that, for Arundel dog owners, a rescue dog has a certain cachet.  Buying from a breeder is not seen as the best option, and some people actually frown on the idea.  This must be music to the ears of animal rescue charities.  They have been urging us for years to look at all the unwanted dogs first, rather than encourage puppy farming.  We are only one small town of admittedly middle class dog lovers, but at least the message is getting through.  Older dogs are the other neglected group, as they are often passed over in favour of puppies.  When we adopted Kev, his age was estimated at nine. We had nearly four rewarding years with him, and given the chance we would do it all over again.   Our beautiful dog was slim and handsome, with a fantastic coat. He always helped me avoid eating too much as half my snacks always reached his stomach.  This is a great alternative to an appetite suppressant, and helped me keep my weight down. That is just one more advantage to having a dog.
