Box Training Starts Your Puppy Off Right
Box training is the best start to training a puppy and leads into the long training period as he grows toward maturity. This is by far the best start to the puppies training and makes more advanced training that much easier. It is a firm basis for his future training.
Box training your young puppy will make you his pack leader in his eyes. Box training also benefits the pup, because he gets to know the routine and loves to have a schedule which he understands. He knows what is happening and that it is predictable, which he loves. This also produces a really well behaved pup.
A strong good box is necessary or best of all a steel dog transportation cage. The metal cage can’t be chewed which gives it an advantage over wood. An animal carrying cage which is equipped with a lock is excellent. It must be large enough so that the pup can stand up and move around a little. A bigger box is not usable as the puppy can wander about, and this will make house training difficult.
If the box is the right size it will become the puppy’s bed where he will not mess. He will learn to wait till he gets out, which you must be certain is no more than an hour when he is young. If left too long he will have to go and will mess in the box because he has no other option. He will stay in the box, with no problems, for longer periods as he grows up.
Try to make being in the box really pleasant for him. When he goes in there give him a pad to sleep on and a treat such as a bone. A good way to start him off with the box is to place a treat in it. He can go in himself to get the treat. For the first several times you should not close the door.Just let him wander in and out.
When the pup enters the box you should praise him and make it a very pleasant experience. Then start to talk quitly to him and to praise him when you shut the door. After about 20 seconds, open the door to let him out and give him a pat. You should gradually increase the time the door is closed, but don’t upset him by making it too long.
You should do this several times on the first day. If you want to succeed every training time should be pleasant and happy for the pup. He will soon understand that the box is his own private retreat and will go in by himself. He will expect a treat and some nice attention from you. When he enters the box offer him his treat and talk to him. In a short time you can begin leaving the room, for a couple of minutes, when he is in the box and gradually increase this time. On returning don’t make a fuss of him, simply open the box. You can complete this training in around 3 days and should then be able to leave him for an hour or so. You can slowly increase the time and in the end he will be fully box trained.
The pup will come to love the box and to feel quite safe while in it. Separation anxiety is quite natural for the puppy when you leave him alone. This can cause bad behavioral traits such as chewing things around the house or messing. When in his box, he has a sense of safety because nothing can harm him in there. He will just go to sleep or chew his treat while waiting for you to come back.
If left at a strange place such as the vet he will be anxious and will cry if not box trained. He feels lost and alone. When box trained, the puppy knows that you will come back to him as you have always done and will not be troubled to the same extent.
The pup must associate the box with good experiences. The box must never be used as a punishment for the pup. Never leave the puppy in the box for more than about 2 hours.Allow only enough time for a good sleep and to chew his treat. If you leave the puppy in the box too long he will cry.Don’t let him out when he cries. He will think he has to cry to get out. Be sure he is being well behaved when you open the box. This will teach him that he can get out of the box if he is quiet.
Make no fuss about it when he is let out, simply open the box and take him out of it to mess. Give him lots of praise and petting when he messes. While in the box, dogs will not go when in their sleep area. Certainly you must not scold him. Clean out the box quietly while he is outside and he will learn to do things the right way. Box training will stop you needing eye cream for dark circles as you will not lose sleep. This is by far the best thing you can do for your puppy and will have a positive influence on him for the rest of his life.
