Kevin the Collie Health Report

I am sorry I have not been to my blog very often lately, I am quite well but we have been fairly busy. Mum stayed at her Mum’s twice recently cos they are looking at houses (yawn). The first time we stayed there I was still quite ill so it was a different vet that we visited. The vet said that Kennel Cough can go on for up to three week, even when you take antibiotics, and she was right. I finished my course of Synolux a week ago and I still cough at night and in the morning. Thanks very much to Oscar, Loui, Simba and Onion who have all been checking up on my health. I promise to blog more often this week, we are back for three days before our next seaside trip.

Kennel Cough at the Vet

What can I say – another vet visit! My cough has not cleared up, in fact everyone thinks it has got worse. Last night I kept everyone awake with my coughing and this morning I was really bunged up. Mum knows that Kennel Cough does not always need antibiotics, but if it persists more than ten days there is a possible bacterial infection. So off we went to the vet. I was quite well behaved even when she put a thermometer up my butt, so I got some treats afterwards. The vet told us that Kennel Cough can be a combined viral and bacterial infection and that there is a chance of it developing into lungworm. Lungworm is spread by foxes and there are lots of foxes living all around here. So now I am taking Synolux for seven days to see the infection off – I hope!

Kennel Cough Home Remedy

I am still coughing quite a lot. Dad rang the vet and they said Kennel Cough is just like a human cold virus. It should go away on its own, and you might need antibiotics if a secondary infection develops. I have been taking linctus and paracetamol, soaked on bread with a bit of mayo on top – yum! Today someone told Mum to give me an infusion of sage: this is a remedy recommended by a dog breeder, so we are trying it. I am taking that soaked on to bread as well.

Snow Dog in Muswell Hill

Last night we had LOADS of snow, it is about six inches deep and everywhere is really quiet cos nobody is going out – including this sick dog, if I had my way. Mum tried to take me for a walk this morning, she went out in front of me to try and take a photos I came down the road. Big mistake – I just turned round and went home! Well I have got Kennel Cough, you know …

Kennel Cough Treatment

Five days after the operation, Mum decided I definitely had Kennel Cough. If your dog is still coughing after a few days you need to go to the vet. In the meantime, a small dose of Pholcodine linctus on a piece of bread helps relieve the dry cough. I am staying away from other dogs for a few days cos we don’t want to create a local epidemic!

Now Kennel Cough – Enough!

I was recovering from my operation quite well and my throat seemed less sore but then I started with a hacking cough. It is the same type of problems that humans have: you go into hospital for an operation and pick up an infection while you are there – maybe I should not have kissed all the other dogs!
