We invited members of the congregation to attend our wedding, and stay for drinks afterwards. One of them kindly brought along Sadie, this beautiful Parsons Jack Russell terrier, who was rescued less than a year ago. She also wore a large cream bow, which looked even bigger on such a small dog. As the priest announced that the ceremoney was complete the congregation applauded. The little dog joined in, barking loudly, to the delight of all concerned. She then posed patiently for dozens of photos.

her owners work in call center outsourcing, and they work shifts to fit in their dog care responsibilities.

As I have been dog sitting for our vicar’s dog recently, it was agreed that she should act as doggie maid of honour, and also represent our own dear departed Kev. On the day, Primrose appeared, resplendent with a beautiful cream bow tied to her collar. True to form the Standard Poodle took the proceedings in her stride and posed graciously for photos with the happy couple and guests. Some might say the ceremony was rather camp but any bereaved dog owner will understand that the presence of primrose and the other dogs helped to ease our grief that our own dog could not be with us on the happy day.

After the service we escaped to a Stratosphere hotel, something we could not have done while he was alive. But I would be very happy to trade holidays abroad for the companionship of my dog again.

One thing that was really annoying as a dog owner was the fact that so many pubs, bars and restaurants were suddenly off limits. Here in the UK most catering outlets believe (mistakenly) that it is against the law to allow dogs in restaurants. This is not true – obviously they should not be roaming around the kitchens sniffing the food, but dogs can accompany their families for an enjoyable meal inside the restaurant. I mentioned in an earlier article that we met a delightful pug called Betty in an Amsterdam restaurant earlier this year. Betty’s owner told me that Amsterdam is a very dog friendly city, and they do not have to leave their dog at home when enjoying an evening out. Who knows – if Betty the Pug applies some anti wrinkle eye cream she might be able to bluff her way in to an English eatery until a similar approach to pet friendly venues prevails in the UK.

We have just come back from a short break in Amsterdam, one of the trips that is easier to take while we do not own a dog. A few more trips are planned before the happy day when I can adopt another rescue dog! One surprise on this trip was the fantastic relaxed dog friendly policy that applies over there. Dog ownership seems to be quite high in Holland, and there were plenty of cute dogs shopping with their owners. A big surprise for me came one evening when we were dining in a wine bar/restaurant and I realised that the couple at a nearby table had their Pug dog sitting beside them while they ate. The Pug, named Betty, was only six months old and she was very well behaved. Nobody was bothered by her presence, in fact they probably didn’t notice she was there. I, of course, went over to meet her and she graciously accepted some chips as a small treat.

I wish we had more restaurants in the UK where dogs are welcom: at present dog owners eating out are made to feel like pariahs as the staff barcode scanner cannot cope with welcoming a dog on the premises.

Well behaved dog owners can eat in a new London restaurant with their dogs

Dog friendly places to eat in London are rare, and usually they are pubs or separate rooms in cafes. More often than not, the term ‘dog friendly’ simply means you can eat at an outside table – not much use in January!

dog friendly cafe

Now a new pub/restaurant, The Commander, in Hereford Grove, is in the heart of trendy Notting Hill – London W2. It has been well known as a gastro pub but when it reopens next week there will be a dog friendly bar & restaurant, deli, market area and a butcher on-site. So after sitting down for a nice relaxing meal with your pet, you can buy some delicious sausages for the dog – in case he is hungry again by the time you get home.

I think this is an excellent development and hope other places follow suit. remember when a restaurant would ask your preference - ‘smoking or non-smoking’? Well now the choice could be dogs or no dogs? Would-be dog owners will also get a chance to sit near some lovely well-behaved dogs and if they ask nicely they might be able to give them a tit bit.

Plenty of independent eateries understand there is nothing to prevent dogs entering restaurants, unfortunately the big chains and pubs tend to be anti-dog as a rule, citing non-existent hygiene restrictions in their defence.

I know it may sound stange, but my house was really not dog friendly until last week. When we moved in here the stairs were not carpeted. Instead they were painted wood, which may look very trendy but it is noisy, cold and very difficult for a dog to climb. The hous has three storeys so this made life very difficult for me – an elderly dog with arthritis. I had several tumbles because there was nothing for my claws to grip on to, and Mum had to carry me up and down as much as possible. Now we have carpet on all four flights. Not only is it much quieter but a lot more comfortable for me. There are still a few more home conforts missing: next week they are going to get a new TV, and there is a lot of talk about whether they can install a wall mounted tv stand themselves. I hope they do something cos I am fed up with the telly being o the floor. yesterday I walked over the remote and I switched channels with my paw. I thought it was a good trick, but they were not veruy happy.

Since we moved to Arundel, West Sussex, we have found plenty of dog friendly pubs as well as shops, and it makes life a lot easier for Mum and Dad. This week we paid our second visit to the Swan Hotel Arundel, where I can go anywhere except the restaurant section. This is fine, as they serve food in the bar as well so we get everything we want. Mum and Dad can have a meal in the pub while I entertain my fans. On Monday we took part in the weekly quiz, of course they hardly knew any answers. While they were struggling, my employment was to distract the other contestants as much as possible!

Finding Pet Friendly Colleges and Universities

It may seem like a strange idea at first, but pet friendly colleges and universities are on the increase. There are still many student accommodations that do not allow pets, but if the thought of leaving your beloved pet at home for months on end while you are at university is something you cannot accept, then you should be able to find a university or college that offers the course you want, and will let your pet stay with you.
Just about every college has the policy of disapproving of students keeping pets This is so for a number of reasons. Pets are usually considered to be smelly, noisy, and capable of biting, or scratching. Another major concern is that some students may be allergic. Also, there is the possibility that once the novelty of having the pet has worn off, and the students get busy with their academic ( and social) activities, they may neglect or abandon their pets. This would not be beneficial for other students, and certainly neither would it be beneficial for the pet.

Thankfully, many authorities are starting to realize that pets can be a great stress reliever, and that pet owners tend to be happier and more relaxed than non-pet owners. Pets can help students cope with the stress of exams and the initial feeling of homesickness at the start of term.

The Biggest Pet Friendly Colleges and Universities

The closest to being pet friendly colleges and universities as far as most are concerned, is to allow fish or small reptiles. That seems “safe” enough, doesn’t it? Naturally, guide dogs and other service animals are allowed. However, in recent years, many more colleges and universities are permitting certain animals on a trial basis. This is good news for college bound students who would prefer to head off to college with their pets.

The two major universities MIT and UCLA will allow cats that have been spayed or neutered. They also require that the animals innoculations are all up to date, and that the animal be registered with the campus housing office. Every resident on the floor has to approve the cat before it can stay there “” to avoid issues with allergies, for example.

Eckered College has special ‘pet dorms’ where cats and dogs are allowed, although they have to weigh less than 40 pounds, and again, all vaccinations have to be up to date. Stephens College will allow cats, dogs and rabbits in one of its halls, but only on the first floor, so pet friendly ‘places’ are limited.

Vassar College have had a pet friendly policy since 1971, although they operate a voting system and require that at least 75% of the residents in a dorm vote in favor of allowing pets before the dorm becomes a ‘pet dorm’.

CALTEC will allow cats in their dorms, as will the State University of New Your. The University of Pennsylvania will allow hamsters, birds, and rabbits.

As you can see, many prestigious colleges and universities will allow pets. Many more consider the possibility each year, so ask about pets when you apply, and you may find that you can take your four legged friend with you when the term starts.

The increasing popularity of the internet means that there are lots of web sites out there for almost any interest. One popular niche is animals. Pet owners can now share tips and advice with those who share their passion, and can discuss everything from pet care to pet friendly travel companies.

Just about all pet friendly websites provide helpful information on pet friendly hotels, bed and breakfasts, and vacation rentals. These are a great asset for pet owners who wish to take their pets with them on vacation. These pet friendly websites even list the conditions under which pets are allowed in certain hotels.
