Lola is a Newfie and she lives in a traditional grocer’s shop, where she lazes for most of the day in the delivery van. The sliding door is left open and Lola collects cuddles from almost everyone who passes by. At the end of last year Lola had a growth in her neck but that was cured. Now she has another malignant growth and it is not responding to treatment. There is no logic to the occurrence of cancer, apart from Mesothelioma cancer. She is nearly eight years old – a good age for a Newfie – but I am afraid there will be some sad news quite soon.

I had the operation on my eye last Tuesday afternoon, after Mum had taken me to the vet’s in the morning. We realised how lucky we are when we met some other dogs who were having treatment. Some of them had cancer and broken bones, so I had to be extra brave.

When Mum came to collect me she could hear me barking, louder than all the other dogs! The nurse tried to quieten me down, but she did not realise I am a bit deaf, so I just barked a bit more. As I came outside I was staggering a bit from the anaesthetic. After we got home I had a few treats and some dinner, Mum told me about the lovely Get Well messages we had received, then I just slept – in my bed – all evening.
