Buying puppies

If you decide that you want to buy a dog or puppy rather than adopt a rescue dog, the reason is usually that you would like a dog from a specific breed. You need to take care in these cases to go to a breeder that treats their animals well, and does not make the bitches carry an excessive number of litters. In these cases, registered breeders are essential if you want to be sure that your puppy has been born in happy surroundings, and well cared for.

Good breeders will want to check you out as well: if they care about animals – and the best breeders are passionate about animal welfare – they will want to reassure themselves that you are equipped to care for the puppy. When they offer dogs for sale they still feel a continuing responsibility for the dogs’ well-being.

This means the breeder will check that you have a suitable home, preferably with an enclosed garden, and that you can give the dog the right amount of exercise according to the breed. They will also ensure that you find yourself a puppy training class where the dogs learn how to socialise with dogs and humans and to fit in with their new pack! If there are any difficulties with your dog in the early days, make sure that you tell the breeder as they will be familiar with the characteristics of that breed and they can give you tips for helping your puppy.

If you get more than one pet owner together, the conversation is likely to turn to vets’ fees and Pet Insurance before too long. Nearly every time Mum takes me out we meet someone else who has had chronic illnesses or allergies as I have done. We took out insurance when I first came to live here and we did not claim during the first year, then in the second year I got and ear infection and we claimed for the vet’s costs.

The company we were insured with was supposed to be a specialist in Pet Insurance, but they were certainly not specialised in working quickly. It took three months of letters backwards and forwards before they agreed to pay the claim. Then another letter arrived, and we ripped it open expecting the cheque. No – the letter just said they agreed to settle! The cheque took another three months to arrive, and by then the policy was due for renewal. Needless to say we did not renew with them. Then we found out M&S are now doing Pet Insurance, it is much better to go with a company that’s well known for quality and service. I still hope to stay well, of course but it is nice to know that the claim will be handled properly if we do need the insurance.

Tidying up

Have I mentioned that my Dad really likes keeping wires under control? Mum never used to care and she just stuffed the wires out of sight but that means they can get hot and then they might short out. Dad introduced her to the joys of cable tie gadgets – it is true – and actually she saw the sense of using them. Also she accepted that the wires needed protection by using wire covers behind her computer and AV equipment. When she moved house she accepted that the cable ties had been really useful!

Now she happily browses through a site called Cable Ties and More, which is a paradise for tidy people. Apparently my Nan has loads of stray cables that need to be tidied because they can be dangerous if you trip on them and that is the last thing anyone wants. Not all their equipment is wireless so they may even need to get some floor cord covers to get the phone connections all round the house safely.

Mum says she knows exactly what to buy Dad for his birthday – a bumper set of cable ties in all colours and sizes. Now he can go round the house tying all the cables to his heart’s desire!

Bite Me Boy

I know you are all well groomed doggies so I want to let you know about Trendy Puppy boutique, where you can buy designer dog collars, small dog carriers, dog clothes and unique dog gifts. Do you know what is the trendiest thing a dog can be seen with this season? It is the new designer luxe leash glove. It is compatible with retractable leads in small and medium sizes. Mostly they are co-ordinated with collars for that trendy, fashionable puppy look. Black is back and better than before, so make sure you are not seen in the wrong colour!! I am really taken with the Bite Me boy dog Jackets, which look cool enough to fit my ‘Top Dog’ Image.

On a practical note, they stock something that Mum says would be really good for us. It is a dog bath robe – how nice and comfy they are for the pet to wear after a refreshing bath. How much better for your family when you do not simply spray all the excess water around the bathroom after your bath!!
