We took out insurance when I first came to live here and we did not claim during the first year, then in the second year I got and ear infection and we claimed for the vet’s costs.

The company we were insured with was supposed to be a specialist in Pet Insurance, but they were certainly not specialised in working quickly. It took three months of letters backwards and forwards before they agreed to pay the claim. Then another letter arrived, and we ripped it open expecting the cheque. No - the letter just said they agreed to settle! The cheque took another three months to arrive, and by then the policy was due for renewal. Needless to say we did not renew with them. Then we found out M&S are now doing Pet Insurance, it is much better to go with a company that’s well known for quality and service. I still hope to stay well, of course but it is nice to know that the claim will be handled properly if we do need the insurance.

Have I mentioned that my Dad really likes keeping wires under control? Mum never used to care and she just stuffed the wires out of sight but that means they can get hot and then they might short out. Dad introduced her to the joys of cable tie gadgets - it is true - and actually she saw the sense of using them. Also she accepted that the wires needed protection by using wire covers behind her computer and AV equipment. When she moved house she accepted that the cable ties had been really useful!

Now she happily browses through a site called Cable Ties and More, which is a paradise for tidy people. Apparently my Nan has loads of stray cables that need to be tidied because they can be dangerous if you trip on them and that is the last thing anyone wants. Not all their equipment is wireless so they may even need to get some floor cord covers to get the phone connections all round the house safely.

Mum says she knows exactly what to buy Dad for his birthday - a bumper set of cable ties in all colours and sizes. Now he can go round the house tying all the cables to his heart’s desire!

On a practical note, they stock something that Mum says would be really good for us. It is a dog bath robe - how nice and comfy they are for the pet to wear after a refreshing bath. How much better for your family when you do not simply spray all the excess water around the bathroom after your bath!!
