One of the differences since I started walking a bit less is that I don’t use up as much energy of course. Mum has noticed that we used to spend about an hour and a half walking every day, and now it is more like twenty minutes. She is worried that she will get fat by taking less exercise, but she also started looking at my weight - cheek! I still love my food, especially when the humans have some tasty leftovers. But I will need to cut my portions down a little if I am to avoid getting fat. That would only make my arthritis even worse, and I certainly do not want to get so big that I need diet pills. Ho, hum…

Mum was looking at a video of me, when I was much more agile and I could run up and down the stairs in our flat. The sad thing is that the film was taken just over a year ago. Since then my poor joints have started to ache and my back legs are very weak with dog arthritis. Mum is now seriously thinking of getting me a kind of pushchair so that we can take longer walks - something like a Bob stroller, she says. It would be much better for walking in the rain, I suppose.

Mum’s youngest niece is staying with my Nan to keep an eye on her and she is bringing her huge battery of beauty products. She has long dark hair and one of her essentials is her prized set of hair straighteners. She says they are the best flat irons she has ever used and they get their own space on the dressing table. Her Grandmother still remembers the way things used to be done when she was a girl: the irons were not powered by electricity or batteries then. Instead they were heated above the flames of the kitchen range, and the way to check if they were ready was to put a drop of water on to the irons. If it sizzled, they were immediately applied to straighten the girls’ hair. Jess says it is amazing they had any hair left! She prefers her pink set with salon features that hold up to regular use, and protect the hair.  They use tourmaline in the manufacture, for extra powerand shine, plus silver and titanium oxide keeps them sterilised. The thermostat keeps the temperature at just the right level so they straighten the length of her hair at a stroke. Watch out, your Nan might take them over …..

I want to highlight the horrible advertising campaign by LOOT, the advertising network, called “Flog your Dog” with a photo of a bulldog. I saw this ad in the Evening Standard on 14 August and I was horrified that they could be so irresponsible. I have complained to the Advertising Standards Authority
because the ad promotes the sale of pets through the Loot’s newspaper publication and online ads. It finishes with the wording. “no animals were hurt during the making of this advert. We take animal welfare very seriously at Loot”. I find this ad. offensive and irresponsible, in the way it promotes the sale of a sentient animal as a commodity. I know it is not illegal to sell pets, but trading unwanted animals through classified ads is completely unregulated. It opens the way for puppy farms to make money out of dogs and for those involved in illegal dog fights to obtain animals that are used as bait in these sickening activities.

If you have time, please join me in complaining about these advertisements, which are putting dogs in danger. Anyone who finds they cannot keep their dog any more should take it to a registered animal shelter so that the pet can be rehomed with responsible owners who will care for him, not sold like a second hand car. I am really shocked that the people at Loot allowed this ad. to be published.
